The Simon Sanchez High School Sharks outlasted the Southern High School Dolphins, winning a 1-0 penalty kick shootout in the championship match of the 2018 Challenge Cup Girls High School Annual Preseason Tournament late Saturday evening at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.

Sharks’ goalkeeper Angelyn Sobrevilla made her mark as the Player of the Match in the final, stopping three penalty kicks in the shootout to lead her team to preseason victory.

The preseason tournament, supported by Japan Football Association, is held annually before the start of the IIAAG Girls High School Soccer League. In addition to the Sharks and the Dolphins, this year’s tournament also featured the Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars, George Washington High School Geckos, Guam High School Panthers, Harvest Christian Academy Eagles, John F. Kennedy High School Islanders, Notre Dame Royals, Okkodo High School Bulldogs, and the Tiyan High School Titans.

Following the final match, Anjelica Perez, captain of the Guam Women’s National Team “Masakåda” and GFA Women’s Committee Member, presented awards to the top two schools in the tournament and a trophy to Sobrevilla.

The championship match can be viewed on GFA’s Internet TV channel:

The Sharks last won the preseason tournament in 2015, the same year the Sharks won their most recent league title. Simon Sanchez High School is the lone school to win both the preseason tournament and the league title in the same year.
