University of Maryland Global Campus in Asia celebrates 70 Years with Guam Commencement

TUMON BAY, Guam — University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) in Asia will honor 42 graduates at its Guam Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa, Tumon Bay, Guam.
The ceremony marks a milestone year — UMGC in Asia’s 70th anniversary of serving U.S. servicemembers and the military community throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
The commencement address will be delivered by Rear Admiral Brett Mietus, Commander of Joint Region Marianas and U.S. Naval Forces Marianas. A native of Chesterfield, Virginia, Rear Admiral Mietus graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics, and earned a master’s degree with highest distinction in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in 2003.
Designated a naval flight officer in 1994, Rear Admiral Mietus has held numerous flying and staff assignments throughout his distinguished career, including Commanding Officer of VP-40 and Commander of Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TEN. He has served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the office of the Vice Chief of Naval Operations, and as the Navy’s first Strategic Integration Group Director. He is also an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI and a plank owner of the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Community’s first Weapons and Tactics Instructor class.
