University of Guam’s Shauntay Leon Guerrero, a senior accounting major and president of the Junior Accountants Society, has been selected as a Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Scholar and will receive $15,000 for academic year 2026-2027.

“As a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education has always felt like a privilege and a luxury,” Leon Guerrero said. “I have always been concerned about how I would afford it, so receiving this generous scholarship from PCAOB is such a blessing as I wrap up my undergraduate journey.”

PCAOB is a nonprofit corporation that oversees the audits of public companies and grants academic scholarships to undergraduate and graduate accounting students attending accredited U.S. universities. The awardees must be nominated by their institution.

Leon Guerrero was nominated by Dr. Doreen Crisostomo-Muña, professor of accounting at UOG, who highlighted Leon Guerrero’s academic performance, focus, and diligence.

“Shauntay consistently pays close attention to detail in her work, a quality that is essential in the accounting profession. She has also taken an active role in student leadership and community service,” Crisostomo-Muña said.

The scholarship funds will support Leon Guerrero as she continues her studies. She plans on pursuing a Master of Accountancy at UOG after she graduates with her bachelor’s next Fañomnåkan (Spring) semester.

“Being a recipient of a prestigious award from PCAOB truly means everything to me,” Leon Guerrero shared. “It will significantly help ease the financial burden and help me progress toward my goal of becoming a certified public accountant.”

Leon Guerrero expressed gratitude to her family for their guidance and support, especially her parents and her aunt.

“I owe this award to them for teaching me the work ethic and discipline that made it possible for me to qualify to be a PCAOB Scholar,” she said.

Leon Guerrero’s selection for the scholarship continues a growing tradition. At least one student from UOG has been named a PCAOB scholar every academic year since 2020.
