University of Guam Land Grant invites Guam residents to participate in its newly launched Community Needs Assessment Survey. The data collected from the approximately 15-minute survey will inform the UOG Land Grant Extension Service how its programs, workshops, and self-education materials can best support island residents in living off the land, in the home, and in the community.

Every U.S. state has at least one land-grant university tasked with “extension” — or bringing university research and expertise to the community on practical life topics. Extension agents do this by developing community-focused workshops and trainings, self-education materials, and programs and by providing technical assistance and assessment services, like plant diagnostics and soil testing. Critical to this mission is determining the needs, interests, and learning preferences of island communities.

“The Land Grant Extension Service is here to help Guam and Micronesia be healthy and thriving places to live,” said Tanisha F. Aflague, interim associate director of extension for UOG Land Grant. “To do this most effectively, we need to know the needs of our community that are relevant and important to residents today.”

The survey will gather information on residents’ topics of interest in the nationwide land-grant focus areas of agriculture and food security, natural resources and environmental stewardship, nutrition and health, and youth, family, and communities. The survey will also ask about residents’ preferred communication channels and learning formats and their typical availability.

The data collection will be ongoing through November 2026. Residents ages 18 and older may take the survey online at https://url.uog.edu/needs-assessment. Following the surveys, more in-depth data will be collected through key informant interviews and focus groups with those willing to participate.
