Summer just wouldn’t be summer on Guam without the island’s signature yearly carnival, night market and Liberation Parade.

The 2018 Guam Liberation Festival kicks off July 11 and runs through July 22, and will be opened 5-9 p.m. July 11-19 and 22, and 5-11 p.m. July 20-21.

The festival features many vendors offering various games, food and carnival rides at the Paseo de Susana Festival Village in Hagatna and the Senator Antonio M. Palomo Guam Museum and Chamorro Educational Facility. There is no admission fee.

A wide variety of meats, desserts, treats, sweets and delicacies are always available. In past celebrations, entertainment has included bingo, caricature painting, novelties, kids’ and adult rides as well as a rock-wall, agricultural displays, trampoline, off-roading, balloons, arts and crafts, paintball, a zip line and various nightly shows.

The Guam Liberation Festival commemorates the U.S. military liberating the island from Japanese occupation on July 21, 1944, and is organized by the Guam Liberation Historical Society and the Mayors’ Council of Guam every year. One of highlights celebration is the annual July 21 Liberation Day Parade.

The festival generates revenue from concession fees which is used to help offset the costs of memorials, prayer services, fireworks, special events and the annual parade – the largest island-wide event on Liberation Day.

Liberation Day is the island’s most important holiday aside from Discovery Day (the first Monday in March).
