OKINAWA, Japan – Thomas McKinney was selected as the Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific Region Athletic Coordinator, responsible for overseeing the overall Pacific athletic program. 
McKinney is a career educator with more than 15 years of teaching physical education, health or science and a seasoned high school coach with 14 years of coaching experience at the middle and high school levels. He joined DoDEA in 2003 as the Kadena High School athletics director, filling the role of the Far East Academic Director for the school starting in 2006. 
During his tenure at the school, McKinney was the Cross Country head coach, Boys Varsity Soccer head coach from March 2007-2010, and the Girls Junior Basketball coach from 2003-2004.
McKinney earned a bachelor’s degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from South Dakota State University and Masters of Education in Adaptive Physical Education at the University of Nebraska. McKinney also has 12 years of combined experience with the South Dakota and Nebraska National Guard.
McKinney is an active community volunteer as the Kadena Special Olympics President and also filled the Kadena High School Department Chair for Professional Technical Studies.

Today, DoDEA Pacific’s 48 schools serve more than 23,500 children of U.S. military and eligible DoD civilian personnel families stationed throughout the Pacific theater. The DoDEA Pacific teaching, administrative and school support team includes more than 3,100 full-time professionals. The schools are geographically organized into four districts: Guam, Japan, Okinawa and South Korea.
