5 Things to see in Tahiti
While mental images of Tahiti might bring about a tropical paradise of beaches, fruity cocktails and beautiful, blue seas, many would-be travelers don’t exactly know what there actually is to see at the largest island in French Polynesia.
Here’s five things to do if you get a chance to visit.
Lively nightlife, beautiful black and white sand beaches, volcanoes — you’ll get the best feel of the island and its culture here in the capital. And don’t forget to hit Mapuru a Paraita market.
Watch the Otea
Originally a male dance, the Otea is the traditional Tahitian dance that the world has come to know. The dance reenacts gestures from daily actions of the islanders.
Hit the Heiva Festival
The largest festival in Tahiti, it’s a showcase of what Polynesian culture is really all about. Started in 1985 after French Polynesia gained a greater independence from France in 1977, the July festival shows off sport, dance, music, singing and dance.
Take a Cruise
Head out on the waters for a cruise to soak up some sun and see the beauty of the nearby islands. Some great snorkeling, great food and a romantic trip to Bora Bora sounds great doesn’t it?
Check out the Local Museums
Tahiti has its share of museums where you can learn about the local history. The Museum of Tahiti and the Islands in Punaauia and The Robert Wan Pearl Museum in Papeete are two of the most recommended.
