Editor’s note: Nothing says Guam like sunny beaches, warm placid waves and watersports. Make sure you don’t get bogged down in the daily grind of your tour here and miss all this island has to offer. Stripes Guam and the Guam Visitors Bureau (visitguam.com) have collaborated to highlight some of the organizations out there that are dedicated to ensuring you make the most of your Guam experience. Enjoy!

Beaches

Crystal waves and fun water activities make Guam’s sandy white beaches the perfect getaway. Pack your swimsuit and sun-screen and enjoy Guam’s endless number of beach options.

Tumon is known for its beautiful beaches along its shores. Many hotels on the beachside provide bungalows for activities like banana boating and kayaking. These water activities provide an excellent opportunity to experience the waters of Guam firsthand. If you are not in such an adventurous mood, the vibrant colors and soothing sounds provide an excellent environment for lounging on the sand while tanning the perfect sun-kissed skin.

If you decide to dip in for a swim, the waters are calm enough for relaxation while providing sufficient waves for beach play. If the daytime scene isn’t convincing enough, the sunsets will take your breath away. Shades of orange and pink contrast against the deepening shade of the ocean to create the perfect ambiance for a romantic walk on the beach.

Guam’s world-renowned beaches are famous for the perfect temperature of the waters. It isn’t too hot or too cold. You can comfortably enjoy swimming in the cool waters as you take in the gorgeous view of palm trees and ocean.

Water Sports

With its warm waters, balmy breezes and perfect weather, Guam’s waters offer the perfect environment for activities ranging from surfing to sport fishing, parasailing and even thrilling jet skiing.

Fishing

Fishing is as popular now as it was in the old days, when Guam’s ancestors were fishing for a living. Through cultural tours, visitors to Guam can learn all about the various types of net fishing such as the throw net or gill net. Those who prefer a more hands-on experience can do trolling or bottom fishing, available from an array of fishing companies. Guam’s charters offer yearlong sea game of mahi mahi, tuna, wahoo and sailfish within minutes after leaving the dock. Customers need only arrive with a towel, some sunblock and the faith that they will strike. Join boat captains who are familiar with Guam’s waters and know exactly where the fish are biting. Learn more about the mechanics of fishing, Guam’s sea conditions, and the nature of the fish that live in our waters.

Many boat charters offer a choice or combination of fishing, historical sightseeing, dolphin watching and more.

Scuba diving

With vibrant reef systems, fascinating marine life and historical shipwrecks, Guam’s exceptional oceanic diversity thrills divers every time they go beneath the waves. There are over 1,000 fish species, 500 coral species, and more than 100 dive sites in the warm turquoise waters surrounding Guam, including unique sites such as the SMS Cormoran and Tokai Mauru shipwrecks—the only place in the world where divers can touch shipwrecks from two different World Wars at the same time.

As a premier diving destination, Guam is one of few places that offers ease of travel, hotel and restaurant variety, and convenient scuba training and certification opportunities. Scuba dive training in Guam is among the most advanced and readily available of anywhere in the Pacific.

Snorkeling

Don’t worry, there is no need for diving equipment to have a great time in Guam’s tranquil waters. The beautiful underwater gardens of Guam provide great snorkeling areas for those in search of an unforgettable adventure. Numerous snorkeling areas around the island are sites of colorful and diverse aquatic life in Guam’s cool and refreshing waters.

Popular snorkeling spots include Gun Beach, Ypao Beach, and the Spanish Steps to name a small few. Gun Beach is a beach paradise in Northern Guam and is home to one of Guam’s prettiest beaches. The serene waters make for safe and enjoyable snorkeling experience. Ypao Beach is located at the southern end of Tumon Bay and is one of Guam’s marine reserves. This natural aquarium is a spot to enjoy the multitude of colorful fish and coral gardens.

The Spanish Steps is a beach site that is considered one of the more breathtaking snorkeling spots on island. Over-arching cliffs and a beautiful view of the vast Pacific Ocean surrounds the picturesque and shallow waters. There are dozens more snorkeling sites to choose from dispersed throughout the scenic island of Guam.

Snorkeling in Guam’s waters is an experience that you will cherish for a lifetime. It is not only an adventure, but each spot is accessible free-of-charge. Have a great time and save your cash for many of the other fun and exciting island experiences available to you.

Fish Eye Marine Park
(Pacific Underwater Observations)

Step onto our pier and out into spectacular Piti Bay. Our 1,000-foot long wooden boardwalk has covered rest areas where you can stop and watch the fish and enjoy the fresh ocean air. Down below tropical fish dart through the coral reefs. Blue waters in every shade of aqua highlight your jaunt out to Micronesia's only undersea observatory. And in late afternoon, you can also marvel at the beauty of the western sunset.

Once at the observatory, the 360-degree upper deck allows you to enjoy seeing the ocean, the coral reefs, outer barrier reef and Guam's majestic mountains. The air-conditioned inner vestibule has a selection of marine art. You can then walk down our spiral staircase to the lower deck. You are now safely beneath the sea and can view the ocean world from 24 windows (16 rectangular and 8 round). Here, dry and comfortable, you will see Piti's amazing marine life and underwater coral gardens.

Watch as our divers attract some of the 200-plus species of fish that call our location home. Brilliant yellow butterflyfish, silvery jacks, curious snapper and odd trumpetfish all pass by the windows. This is one of the most important places on the island for fish to mate, hatch, grow in the protection of the corals and also get cleaned. Undersea cleaning stations can be seen from many of the observatory windows. Here small fish preen parasites from larger fish, an important act on the reef.

After watching the fascinating reef action, you can again enjoy the upper deck and stroll back at your leisure. Just across the street is our restaurant. Marvel at the natural setting and waterfall and pile your plate high with our buffet lunch. Set next to a cliff line and melodic waterfall, the island ambiance is soothing. Come visit our special Pacific gift shop full of crafts, T-shirts, photographer Tim Rock products and great souvenirs.
