Fun on Guam: I’e’ Kids' Fishing Derby June 10

The Department of Agriculture's Division of Aquatic & Wildlife Resources (DAWR) will be holding the first ever I’e’ Kids' Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 10, 2023 in the Marine Preserve at Ypao Beach Park. The derby is FREE and open to kids ages 6-17.  

Participants may register at the DAWR office in Mangilao (163 Dairy Road), from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, from May 22nd until Friday June 9th, the day before the derby.  Registration forms must be signed by Parents/Legal Guardians and will be accepted along with original supporting documents to verify proof of age of the youth (birth certificate, passport, military or Guam ID, legal documentation). Registered participants are encouraged to attend the fishing clinic at 1PM on June 3rd, 2023, to learn the best method of successfully catching this particular species, and a mandatory safety briefing will be held at 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the derby.

This year the spotlight will be focused on fishing for the traditionally well sought after i’e’, also known as juvenile trevally or tarakitu. I’e’ is a seasonal fish that makes its way to our island's shores in late May through early June. Participants will be fishing in one of the five marine preserve areas and will learn its importance of protecting, preserving, and conserving aquatic life and marine communities.

These events, stemming as far back as 1989, serve as an opportunity to encourage and enhance recreational fishing and aim to produce generations that truly take an interest in the preservation of the island's resources. Magdalena Olter, a new employee to the department, had the pleasure of entering her 8-year-old son Charlamange in the last kids fishing derby. “It was my son’s first-time fishing and his first time participating in a derby. It was a great experience for the both of us. He was able to learn how to set up his rod and reel and was able to catch 4 fish that day.”
