Brazilian jiujitsu is one of the fastest growing martial arts and a hallmark of the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) scene. Jiujitsu classes and clubs are on U.S. military bases virtually everywhere. Writer and photographer Joe Garcia teams up with Kris Kim to bring you Jiujitsu Technique for the Week. Kim (pictured here in white) is a black belt in Brazilian jiujitsu and the head instructor for Yongsan BJJ at Trent Warrior Fitness Center on U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, S. Korea. Kim is also the BJJ coach for Team Posse MMA, Body and Seoul Martial Arts and United Forces BJJ.

  1. Secure head and arm control from the side mount position.

  2. Grab the tip of the far side gi with your hand, furthest away from your opponent’s head. Ensure your opponent is unaware of your activity.

  3. Feed the tip of the gi to your hand under your opponent’s head. Pulling the gi tight against his neck.

  4. Hop onto a knee-on-belly position while pulling your opponents head off the mat.

  5. Feed your opposite hand on top of the Kimono, pressing your forearm against your opponent’s neck.

  6. Pull your opponents head further off the mat, while driving your forearm deeper into your opponent’s neck. Stop when your opponent taps or naps.
