Practical, locally relevant knowledge and resources for consumers, families, agricultural producers, and small businesses will be showcased at a first-time community festival next week called Extoberfest.

Hosted by the Cooperative Extension & Outreach service and the Western Pacific Tropical Research Center of the University of Guam, the event will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the courtyard of the Agriculture and Life Sciences building on the UOG campus.

Extension is a mission of land-grant universities to bring practical, research-based information outside of the classrooms and research labs to the broader community through educational workshops, resources, and campaigns. The event aligns with the university’s 50th anniversary as a federally designated land-grant institution.

“Extension acts as a bridge for the community to continue learning about topics and skills that are relevant to their daily lives,” said Lee S. Yudin, dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, which carries out the university’s extension service. “We created Extoberfest to inspire people to try something new and beneficial to their lives and the island by using the resources around them.”

With subject-matter experts from UOG as well as from nonprofits, small businesses, and agencies, the festival will showcase home gardening, backyard beekeeping, nutritious cooking using locally grown foods, and making use of plentiful island resources by creating value-added products.
