Dededo, Guam — The Guam Amateur Baseball Association (GABA) proudly wrapped up two successful weeks of its Summer Baseball Academy programs, providing local youth with an unforgettable opportunity to develop their skills alongside top-tier instructors from Japan and the U.S. mainland.

The first week, held June 16–20, welcomed a delegation of highly respected baseball instructors from Japan, including former professional players Shotaro Tashiro and Ryo Akiyoshi of the Yakult Swallows. The visiting pros offered players ages 8–18 a unique cultural exchange and technical training experience, focusing on fundamentals, fielding, pitching mechanics, and batting discipline — blending traditional Japanese baseball philosophy with local enthusiasm.

The second academy, held June 23–27, featured collegiate coaching expertise from Delta College (California) with Coach Nate Gregory and Coach Heath Lane leading instruction. These experienced college coaches brought high-level knowledge and energy to the Northern Regional Sports Complex, guiding campers through specialized skill clinics, positional drills, and competitive scrimmages designed to elevate their baseball IQ and personal performance.

“We’re incredibly proud of the turnout and the commitment shown by our young athletes,” said Mike Soderquist, organizer of the Summer Baseball Academy. “Having both Japanese professionals and U.S. college coaches on island not only provided world-class training but also inspired our players to aim higher and dream bigger.”

Over 60 players participated in the two-week program, with daily morning instruction sessions followed by afternoon recreational activities, including scrimmages, movie days, bowling, and beach outings. The academy emphasized both athletic development and the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and cultural exchange.

Parents and families expressed enthusiastic support for the program. “It was a tremendous opportunity for the players to learn from the visiting coaches,” said Jessie, a parent of one of the academy participants. “The instructors were so positive and really connected with the kids.”

Another parent added, “We truly hope these coaches can come back next year. Our children gained so much — not just in skills, but in confidence and love for the game.”

GABA extends its heartfelt appreciation to the visiting instructors, local volunteers, parents, and community partners who made the academies possible. Plans are already underway for next year’s summer academies, with hopes to expand the program and offer even more opportunities for Guam’s aspiring baseball players.
