UOG and Cabras Marine partner for internships
University of Guam December 1, 2023
The University of Guam (UOG) and Cabras Marine Corporation (CMC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Nov. 28, 2023, to provide internships to UOG students seeking professional jobs.
The agreement states CMC will open a maximum of 20 internship positions for students studying in the fields of engineering, human resources, business administration, finance, accounting, or contracting. Summer internships will be paid positions, according to the MOU.
The agreement goes with UOG President Anita Borja Enriquez’s emphasis toward further developing the island’s professional workforce.
“It’s all about building the capacity of our professional workforce through special early pipeline partnerships like this,” said President Enriquez. “This partnership with Cabras Marine helps us meet our goal to create opportunities for our students while at UOG, that will help them secure well-paying jobs after they graduate."
Joseph L. Cruz, President of CMC, said CMC will also offer part-time jobs to students who excel in their internships even when they are still studying at UOG.
“It is very exciting to create this pipeline for professional employees,” said Cruz, adding there is a need for various employees who can prepare procurement documents, manage projects, estimate costs, and conduct work in human resources and finance, among other professional work.
As CMC builds its workforce, its capability to conduct business will expand, and this will be beneficial to the island economy, Cruz said.
A Department of Defense Contractor, Cabras Marine owns the only waterfront full-service shipyard facility serving Guam and its neighboring islands, and is the leading provider of pilot, tug, barge, spill response, ship firefighting, and ferry services in Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
