The Isla Center for the Arts at the University of Guam announces the 25th Annual Art-a-Thon Exhibition with the theme “Preserving Our Home: Sustainability in Art.”
The opening reception for the exhibit will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at House No. 15, Dean’s Circle, on campus at UOG. The exhibit will continue through Feb. 23, 2024.
The exhibit is open to the public and free of charge.
The exhibit will showcase 55 works selected from the artwork of 314 students from 17 Guam Department of Education Schools who participated in this school year’s Art-a-Thon.
Students from elementary, middle, and high schools produced these impressive works using a variety of media including crayons, pastels, colored pencils, ink, collage, mixed media, pastels, markers, watercolor, ink, acrylics, and cardboard, said Dr. Velma Jean Yamashita, Associate Professor of Art, and Coordinator at Isla Center for the Arts.
This year’s Art-a-Thon is unique in several ways. Due to the island’s continuing recovery from Typhoon Mawar, the pledging component of the Art-a-Thon was not included this year. This year’s focus is solely on the production of artwork and the promotion of artistic expression. This year’s theme is “Preserving Our Home: Sustainability in Art.”
The Isla Center for the Arts worked with Guam Green Growth (G3) Circular Economy Makerspace & Innovation Hub, located in Chamorro Village in Hagåtña, to create unique frames using pallet wood and exhibition posters for the featured works of art.
This project is sponsored by the UOG College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
