In January, the University of Guam’s Guam/Micronesia Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program is pleased to offer several online workshops for caregivers of persons with dementia.

CARES Activities of Daily Living – Module 7: Grooming

In the first week of January, members of the community will have the opportunity to participate in Module 7 of the CARES Activities of Daily Living training and certification program, which teaches caregivers how to help persons with dementia with the fundamental activities of daily living (ADLs). Module 7 focuses on Grooming. These sessions will be held:

• 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 3 • 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, January 6

Managing Chronic Illness

In the second week of January, Ms. Veronica Alave, MSN/ED, CDS, RN will give two presentations on how to manage chronic illnesses along with understanding the importance of monitoring blood pressure, respiration, pulse and oxygen levels. These sessions will be held:

• 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 10 • 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, January 13

CARES Activities of Daily Living – Module 8: Mouth Care

In the third week of January, members of the community will have the opportunity to participate in Module 8 of the CARES Activities of Daily Living training and certification program. Module 8 focuses on Mouth Care. These sessions will be held.

• 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 17 • 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, January 20

Sharing Caregiver Stories and Finding Support

In the fourth week of January, two sessions will provide participants with an opportunity to share their experiences as family caregivers of persons with dementia and to receive support and guidance from other members of the group. These sessions will be held:

• 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 24 • 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, January 27

Modified Bed Bath

In the last week of January, Ms. Veronica Alave, MSN/ED, CDS, RN and Ms. Jennifer Salas, BSN, RN will provide guidance and training to family caregivers on how to give a modified bed bath to older adults and persons with dementia. These sessions will be held:

• 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 31 • 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, February 3

Ongoing dementia support groups

These sessions are part of the ongoing online support groups for family caregivers of persons with dementia being conducted by the Guam/Micronesia Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program of the UOG School of Health. The support group sessions are held on Zoom on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings year-round. The sessions are free of charge to partners, family members, and other caregivers of persons with dementia who have ties to Guam and the Micronesian region.
