About the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Rankings

The Best Colleges Rankings assesses U.S. bachelor’s degree-granting institutions on 17 measures of academic quality. To calculate the rankings, U.S. News focuses on academic quality and places emphasis on outcome measures, including graduation rates, retention rates, graduate indebtedness, and social mobility.

UOG ranked in the following categories:

Regional Universities West

UOG is categorized as a “regional university,” which is an institution that offers a broad scope of undergraduate degrees and some master’s degree programs, with few, if any, doctoral programs.

Top Public Schools

Public colleges and universities typically operate under the supervision of state governments. They are funded, in part, by tax dollars and subsidies from the state. As a result, these universities often offer discounted tuition to residents of their states. This list includes the highest-ranked public colleges and universities.

Best Value Schools

This ranking accounts for academic quality and the 2023-2024 net cost of attendance for an out-of-state student who received the average level of need-based financial aid. The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal. Only schools ranked in or near the top half of their categories are included in the ranking.

Best Colleges for Veterans

This category includes the top-ranked schools that participate in federal initiatives helping veterans and active-duty service members pay for their degrees.

Top Performers on Social Mobility

This category includes colleges that are successful at advancing social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of economically disadvantaged students awarded with Pell Grants. Many of these federal Pell Grants are awarded to students whose adjusted gross family incomes are under $50,000.
