I’ve been attempting to update my July 9, 2009 review of Port of Mocha Coffee House which then was located in the Acanta Mall, but couldn’t since they kept expanding into new locations! There was a Tumon move to across the Reef Hotel & Olive Spa, then a Micronesia Mall opening. In the past year we’ve been to the Tumon location with its outdoor hookah den; we’ve eaten at the Hagatna location next to the Bank of Hawaii (a couple of times – even had a waffle there); and now that there is a Port of Mocha in our Tamuning neighborhood, we’ve been there more than usual. What has happened?
For us, it’s the juice! Yes, fresh squeezed natural vegetables and fruits that can be blended in a number of combinations, all tantalizingly delicious and super nutritious! I don’t buy the coffee; it’s all about that Juice!
Before the juice, though, Port of Mocha Coffee House started out with wraps, bagels, pastries, and beverages, both hot and cold. I have had the Brat Wrap, Carribbean Spice Wrap, Rise & Shine Wrap, Good Morning Bagel, Bagel & Lox, the Rueben, The Ham, and Smoked Salmon Wrap. I had hoped to have their Certified Angus Beef Burger, which is served only at their Tumon location and their location next to the DNA Bldg. One day!
For now though, the Tamuning location is one of two that has the designation of Port of Mocha Coffee House & Juice Bar (the other is Agana Shopping Center). I have to give credit to Jay Dewan, the founder and owner of Port of Mocha, for his vision in expanding the mass availability of fresh beverages made from juicing.
His juice bars are sophisticated and have complete menus with beverages concocted to address a number of health challenges, including blood pressure, diabetes, gout, joint treatment, cholesterol, Alzheimer’s prevention, breast cancer prevention, heart disease, immune system, and more. There are more than 20 different ingredients available that can be combined in your drink. These include cucumbers, carrots, apples tomatoes, spinach, kale, ginger, lemons, celery, beets, oranges, turmeric root, parsley, strawberry and more. These are excellent for weight loss and disease prevention!
One of the drinks I had was the Green Machine, which has apple, cucumber, celery, kale, lemon, and ginger root. The available sizes are “tall” (16 oz for $6) and “grande” (20 oz for $7.25). They also have real fruit and vegetable smoothies. You also have all of your espresso favorites, along with their signature mochas, coffee-based blended drinks, “cremes” (non coffee), and gourmet chais.
You can mix up and add ingredients to the standard drinks to created your own blend. Get a Shrug it (carrot, apple, orange) for stroke prevention. How about the Move Over V-8 (tomato, celery, cucumber, carrot, parsley, spinach) for prostate cancer prevention). I also had the Oxygen (apple, beet root, carrot, ginger root, lemon, and hint of cayenne pepper) which probably helps you breath better!
Each Port of Mocha Coffee House location has its own personality, with each offering strong visuals promoting coffee from plant to bean to roasting to extraction. Coffee is about tradition and it has an elaborate history. Jay shares his passion and knowledge with all. I get a little sentimental when I now go to the other locations (I haven’t been to them all) since I remember Sunday morning bagels or a hot mocha (my treat).
I guess we’ve all kind of grown with Jay as he’s expanded. His newest location in Tamuning is his flagship! The upstairs seating area is spacious, comfortable, and has a view of Chalan San Antonio and Marine Corps Drive traffic. It’s a great meeting place and has excellent hours. The parking tends to be a problem because of how busy this strip mall has become. That location used to be Paul’s Tailors for you “old-timers.”
Congrats to Jay and his entire team for creating this vast enterprise that celebrates coffee and extols healthy living through intelligent choices. When I have one of these new juice creations, my face lights up. These drinks taste great and they are so good for you!
Go to Port of Mocha Coffee House and Juice Bar to get your juice on!
Bon appetit!
