This month, the community can participate in several virtual support-group sessions focused on spiritual support for persons with dementia and family caregivers.

Two representatives of the Mariana Islands Baha’i Community, Carol Simpson-Warner and Martha Martinez, will offer virtual presentations on “Spiritual Support through the Baha’i Faith” on Aug. 3 and 6.

Two representatives of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, Pastor Colin Garraway and Elena Taneva-Cholakova, FNP-BC, will offer virtual presentations on “Spiritual Support through the Seventh-day Adventist Church” on Aug. 10 and 12. Garraway is the chaplain and Taneva-Cholakova is a board-certified family nurse practitioner at the Guam SDA Clinic.

Rev. Francis Hezel, SJ, a parochial vicar at Santa Barbara Catholic Church, will offer virtual presentations on “Spiritual Support through the Catholic Church” on Aug. 17 and 20.

Rev. Irene Egmalis Maliaman, the vicar at St. John Episcopal Church, will offer virtual presentations on “Spiritual Support through the Episcopal Church” on Aug. 24 and 27.

The presentations are part of the ongoing online support groups for family caregivers of persons with dementia being conducted by the Guam/Micronesia Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program of the University of Guam School of Health.

Ongoing dementia support groups The GWEP dementia support group sessions are held remotely on Zoom every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning year-round. The sessions are free of charge to partners, family members, and other caregivers of persons with dementia who have ties to Guam and the Micronesian region.
