Welcome to virtual vacation video series where we can explore destinations from the comfort of our homes.
Join us as we take a short virtual journey to Miura Peninsula in Japan.
The great thing about this destination is that it is easily accessible in less than 2 hours from Tokyo and most of U.S. military bases located in the Kanto Plain.
Home to Yokosuka Naval Base, Miura Peninsula is a wonderful area filled with rich historical and natural attractions. Not only does it boast many beautiful parks, flower gardens and beaches, but it also has unique Shinto shrines of legends and the nation’s largest tuna port, making the peninsula a great getaway.
Some of the must-see spots in Miura Peninsula include:
Sarushima (Monkey Island) - A mile off the coast near Yokosuka Naval Base, Sarushima is the largest uninhabited natural island in Tokyo Bay and was used by the Japanese military as a fort field until the end of World War II. Today, You can visit the island by ferry from Yokosuka City. Strolling along the peaceful route, you can see old powder magazines and barracks made of brick surrounded by overgrown forest. The landscape and military ruins give the island a mysterious look and the feeling of an ancient civilization.
Soleil Hill - Soleil Hill is an admission-free park originally used as a housing and radio facility by the U.S. military and Japan Self Defense Forces. This large park is home to impressive farmhouses, windmills and storage buildings modeled after houses in South France, along with a Ferris wheel, restaurant, spa, barbecue, camping, archery field, go-karts, and other attractions. In the tiny zoo, friendly staffers let you pet and feed various animals, such as rabbits, kangaroos and donkeys.
Misaki Port - Misaki Port is an impressive and important port boasting the second largest annual haul of tuna in the country. While the tranquil fishing village gives off a nostalgic atmosphere, most of the restaurants clustered around the port serve up tuna dishes. Fisharina Wharf Urari, the port market, offers many tuna products including raw fish and tuna curry, and even, tuna ice cream and a one-of-a-kind “maguro toro man,” which is a tuna-filled steamed bun.
While you're there, don't forget to sample sashimi or other tuna products. Miura is famous for high-quality fruits and vegetables brands, such as Miura watermelon, Miura radish and Miura cabbage, too.
