(Fadian, Guam) – Guam Power Authority (GPA) announced earlier this month that as part of its Public Power Week celebration, the employees would be hosting a canned food drive to benefit Catholic Social Service. The food drive began on October 2, 2023 as a kick-off for this year’s celebration and employees wrapped up the month-long canned food drive campaign on October 20, 2023. Each year, during the first week of October, GPA joins public power utilities across the U.S. in celebrating Public Power Week and community-owned electric utilities. According to GPA General Manager John Benavente, P.E., “Once again this year, GPA included a special community-focused outreach with Catholic Social Service as this year’s benefitting organization.” GM Benavente added “I applaud and commend the more than 400 employees of GPA for organizing this year’s Public Power Outreach and for their commitment to serve our local community.”

“Charitable organizations such as Catholic Social Service have seen an increase in the number of residents who need assistance,” said Assistant General Manager of Administration Tricee Limtiaco. “Our employees look to Public Power Week as a time to further serve members of our community, who are also our customers, family members, and neighbors. This year, we collected food items to fill the shelves at Catholic Social Service so they can continue to do their good work of feeding individuals and families in need.” The goal was to help these organizations with the services they bring to the public and aid them in giving back to the community. The support for these charitable organizations by GPA employees and the community was overwhelming. GPA collected and contributed 2,628 food items and 128 supply items for Catholic Social Service. Items such as canned meats, seafood, veggies and fruit along with rice, beans and non-refrigerated milk were among the items donated during the food drive. On October 24th, GPA transported and dropped off three truck-loads of donated canned and other food items to Catholic Social Service. CCU and GPA Management thank GPA employees, GWA management & employees, our energy partners, and the community for giving to such a worthwhile cause and for supporting these non-profit organizations. We are grateful for the support to help these organizations fill their food pantries and replenish their supplies.
