(Piti, Guam) - The Guam Power Authority (GPA) announced today the maintenance schedule of the Cabras 2 generator, one of Guam’s oldest and largest baseload generators. The Cabras 2 unit will be offline through February 14, 2023.

Specialized technical experts and plant personnel will conduct a major overhaul that will include the replacement of archway tubes, replacement of gas and air duct expansion joints, maintenance of air preheaters and burner fronts, and an inspection and overhaul of the turbine generator, to name a few. The total cost of the inspections, maintenance, and repair work is about $5 million.

GPA General Manager John M. Benavente, P.E. noted, “Taking Cabras 2 offline allows us to make the necessary inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure that the baseload generator’s reliability is improved until the new 198 MW Ukudu Power Plant comes online. We continue to work diligently to maintain the older units to increase their reliability and safety while improving the plant’s efficiency.”

With the scheduled maintenance, GPA asks customers to conserve energy when possible, particularly during peak hours from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. GPA does not expect any service interruptions as a result of the maintenance.

GPA GM Benavente added, “Once the Ukudu Power Plant is commissioned in 2024, we can finally take steps to retire the aged Cabras units so our customers can begin to see improvements in their power bills and enhanced stability of our power system. We continue to conduct maintenance on the aged Cabras units to ensure their availability through 2024.”
