The University of Guam is clarifying recent public statements by Senator Chris Barnett on Instagram that inaccurately suggest the University plans to raise tuition.

This claim is incorrect. While UOG retains the authority to adjust tuition if necessary, there are no current plans to raise tuition. In fact, maintaining affordability is one of the key reasons the University is seeking additional funding.

The Legislature is currently considering Bill 58-38, which proposes a one-time $5.7 million appropriation to support urgent needs related to accreditation and institutional operations. The supplemental funding is intended to help close a budget shortfall for the current fiscal year. Any amendments tying this funding to a three-year tuition freeze would significantly limit UOG’s ability to respond to rising costs, inflation, and unforeseen fiscal challenges.

“Affordability and access are cornerstones of UOG’s mission,” said UOG President Anita Borja Enriquez. “We appreciate the Legislature’s support and encourage open dialogue to ensure students remain the top priority — both in terms of affordability and the quality of education they receive — while also ensuring the long-term sustainability of the University.”
