The great thing about this destination is that it is easily accessible from Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok and other major cities in the Pacific.
Often associated as the last out-of-the-way region in Asia, Myanmar is a mysterious nation blessed with untouched forests, traditional Buddhism culture and arts, friendly people and delicious cuisine. This is a great place for a quick virtual getaway.
Some of the must-see spots in Myanmar include:
Bagan— This registered UNESCO World Heritage site was once the capital of the first Pagan Kingdom, which united the whole of Myanmar during the early 11th century. Today, this site is home to nearly 4,000 Buddhist temples and pagodas. Among them, the 915-year-old Ananda Temple with a majestic golden tower and four big Buddhas at its center is a must-see.
Inle Lake and Ruins of Kakku— Th picturesque freshwater lake in Shan Hight is known for its floating villages made up of temples, houses and farms. Nearby, head to the ruins of Kakku, famous for the 2,457 bell-shaped ancient stupas packed in this small area, for a trip into the country’s ancient past.
Mandalay— The capital of Myanmar’s last Dynasty of Alaungphaya, Mandalya remains as the center of its Buddhist culture. Here you’ll find a gorgeous palace, golden temples and pagodas, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of monks in their crimson vestment walking along the street!
A visit to Myanmar would not be complete without sampling popular shan rice noodles with chicken or minced pork, onions, garlic, tomatoes and roasted peanuts. Danbank, a rice dish boiled with chicken and mixed spices, is also a popular street food that you can’t miss.
