(Fadian, Guam) - In the interest of providing customers with information of potential outages so that they can plan accordingly, the Guam Power Authority advises customers of possible rotating outages from 6 p.m. through 9 p.m. today. Two (2) of the island’s four (4) baseload power plants are offline, reducing the total power generation capacity to 222 megawatts. Piti# 8 is currently offline for scheduled maintenance and is expected to return to service tomorrow. Additionally, Cabras 2 was offline last night at around 11:25 pm for emergency repairs to the boiler system and is anticipated to return to service on Monday, April 3rd. Again, the notice is provided but does not mean a power interruption is imminent.
“GPA operations personnel are making every effort to provide sufficient power supply to meet customer demands including expediting repairs on Piti #8, and placing GWA assets on standby generator power during peak usage hours,” stated GPA General Manager, John M. Benavente, P.E. “We ask for your patience and kindly request that all customers conserve power, especially during the peak demand hours from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.,” added GM Benavente. Despite all efforts, if there is a shortage of generation capacity tonight, GPA will, as a last resort to maintain grid stability, implement rotating outages lasting up to 1-hour. Power will be reconnected to all affected customers at the top of each hour.
The schedule of outages for tonight will be posted on GPA’s website and social media pages.
GPA reminds its customers that the construction continues on the new 198 Megawatt Ukudu Power Plant located in Dededo. The contractor is making significant progress. Construction work continues on the fuel tanks, treated water tanks, control electrical building, heat recovery steam generator buildings, gas turbine buildings, steam turbine Buildings, fuel and water treatment buildings, and Ukudu switchyard. Excavation and fuel pipeline installation work continues throughout the island. The heavy haul transportation is ongoing. Large equipment for the Ukudu Power Plant will continue to be transported through May 2023.
GPA is looking forward to the new Ukudu Power Plant and other renewable energy projects to come online that will allow for the reduced, affordable fuel LEAC rate, strengthen the power grid system, reduce emissions and allow for retirement of old and more expensive power plants. These are all big steps towards GPA’s clean, reliable and affordable energy plan.
