Please be advised that due to severe adverse conditions brought on by Super Typhoon Mawar, almost all of our circuits have been impacted and without power. GPA was able maintain power to a portion in the north served by underground transmission lines. It helps substantially to have some part of the system continue to operate throughout the storm to make for faster storm recovery.
The Island-Wide Power System is at this time providing energy to only about 1,000 of its approximately 52,000 customers. The Dededo CT plant is the only plant left on line serving specifically Anderson Air Force Base (AAFB), Marine Base Blaz and a small portion of Dededo village. The rest of the system blacked out between 1:03 p.m. to 2 p.m.
At 1:00pm today, power continued to flow to about 71% of our customers. Thereafter, circuits including transmission lines began tripping in a cascading effect. We were able to avoid a complete Island-wide blackout when the system severed into two grids. We are working hard to maintain the last remaining customers thru the storm which contributes to quicker recovery after the winds die down later tonight or in the early morning hours.
Power to GMH has also gone down due to an issue within the Harmon Substation which we can’t safely address at this time. As soon as we can begin to make repairs, we will get island power back to GMH. GMH is currently operating under standby generator power.
Once again, repairs of the entire system will resume once high winds die down to a safe level, GPA will mobilize our teams to proceed with assessments and repairs. This will begin the recovery phase of the island-wide power system around Guam. Again, our GPA team is prepared to immediately begin restoration as soon as winds decrease to safe levels.
GPA wants everyone to continue to stay safe and secure and we ask for your patience and understanding as we get through the storm together.
