The University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant is set to launch CHalan Deskubre magazine on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the Micronesia Mall center court.

CHalan Deskubre is a place-based science magazine designed for children in Guam and the Northern Marianas. The magazine aims to inspire children to adopt a scientific mindset, encouraging exploration beyond the classroom.

“The CHalan Deskubre magazine features stories and activities that incorporate local resources, ecosystems, traditions, and values, making it more relevant and meaningful for students in Guam and the wider region,” said UOG President Anita Borja Enriquez. “Providing this tailored educational resource is crucial in nurturing a sense of pride and stewardship among our youth, fostering appreciation for the island's traditional wisdom and natural resources.”

The inaugural issue delves into the convergence of science and traditional knowledge in Guam and the surrounding region. Its stories and sections highlight how indigenous communities and their wisdom contribute to scientific advancements and innovative practices. “Our magazine, CHalan Deskubre, is crafted to ignite curiosity and discovery, guiding children on a path to scientific inquiry in our unique island environment,” said Dr. Austin Shelton, Director of the UOG Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant. “Each issue of the magazine will offer informative content, interactive games, and engaging hands-on activities.”

The UOG Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant received funding from the Education Stabilization Funds (ESF) for the Innovating Through Pandemic Challenges to Deliver Place-Based Education in Marine, Environmental, and Sustainability Sciences program, a part of the Governor of Guam’s Education Assistance and Youth Empowerment Grant Program.
